October 13, 2007
West, TX
West Auction Arena
Sale Auctioneer: Brian Uptmore
Commentator: David Stanley
Top 10 Registered Lots Averaged $1,300
Registered Lot Average $639
Commercial Lot Average $285

Volume Buyers: Hal Brame, Moyers, OK; Cody Lee, Gatesville, TX; Bill and Peggy Johnson, Waco, TX; Gerald Abbott, Rio Vista, TX; Charles East, Dallas, TX.

Many TLBAA members and Longhorn breeders from across the country packed the West Auction Sale Arena on Saturday, October 13, 2007, for the Best at West TLBAA Membership Sale. At the sale, attendees enjoyed the chance to bid on 131 lots of registered Texas Longhorns and 156 commercial lots.

TLBAA members and Longhorn breeders from across the country came out to support the Best at West TLBAA Membership Sale.

The High Selling Lot SH POOR PITIFUL PITTY-PATY (a 1999 daughter of VJ Tommie (aka Unlimited) and JJ Dottie 037/5) sold for $1,650, and was Consigned by Homer and Sonny Vaughn, Wayne, OK, and bought by Homer Neeper, Fort Worth, TX.

Volume Buyer Hal Brame,
Moyers, OK.

Also at the sale was a film crew documenting two TLBAA members, Bill and Peggy Johnson, Waco, TX. The director of the documentary Jeff Bowden, Austin, TX, said they had been filming the Johnsons for two weeks and were focusing their documentary on the Johnsons’ Rodeo Pawnshop in Waco, TX, a one-of-a-kind pawnshop specializing in rodeo tack, saddles and ropes. Bowden said that the documentary will focus on the rodeo lifestyle and the sacrifices people are willing to make to do something they love. He said they followed the Johnsons to the sale to see another interesting aspect of the Western lifestyle that is not well known to the outside world.

Documentary filmmaker Jeff Bowden, Austin, TX, with Peggy and Bill Johnson, Waco, TX. Bowden was filming a documentary he was making about the Johnsons’ business, the Rodeo Pawn Shop.

With the sale prices looking good, many TLBAA members were in good sprits during the sale as TLBT President Ashton Dunsworth sold raffle tickets for the TLBT “Luck of the Longhorn Raffle”. According to Dunsworth, the raffle raised the highest raffle yet for the TLBT. While Dunsworth was selling raffle tickets, TLBAA member Carl Brantley, Wilkesboro, NC, asked her if she took a special kind of currency, an Iraqi Dinar. Brantley pulled the Dinar from his wallet and showed it to Dunsworth. TLBAA Board Member Charlie Buenger was quick to joke that the Dinar wasn’t legal tender in the United States. They all enjoyed a good laugh and Brantley purchased his raffle tickets with American money.

Carl Brantley tried to buy a TLBT raffle ticket from TLBT President Ashton Dunsworth using an Iraqi Dinar, but Charlie Buenger quickly overruled that transaction.

At the Friday night party, TLBAA Board Member Paul and Mari-Kathryn Braswell, Forestburg, TX, sponsored the adult beverages and coordinated the delicious food spread with the much-appreciated assistance of Asa and Joan Gamble, Hubbard, TX. The Gambles also provided the barbeque grill and assisted the Braswells in coordinating the Friday night party.

Local FFA Group benefits from Airport Parking Company Adding Longhorns

From AFP Press Release

Airport Fast Park (AFP), an off-site airport parking company at the Austin Texas Airport, is looking after more than just automobiles these days. The off-site airport parking company is using 74 acres of its land as agricultural pastures to educate local Del Valle High School (DVHS) Future Farmers of America (FFA) how to raise and breed Texas Longhorn cattle.

Two pastures will be home to six Longhorns: Special Star, a 15-year-old cow with 67-inch horns; Risen Susie Q, a 14-year-old cow with 65-inch horns; Simply Devine, a six-year-old cow; Spangles, a three-year-old steer; Patches, a three-year-old heifer; and Tizzy, an 18-month-old heifer.

“As an alumnus of the University of Texas, I know how meaningful the Texas Longhorn is to our community,” said Michael H. Anderson, a principal with AFP and manager of the Chavez Cattle Company, LLC. “The Longhorn represents the pride and tradition of the university as well as the State of Texas. This is truly an amazing experience for residents and visitors to our parking facility and the Austin-Bergstrom Airport.”

Anderson oversees AFP’s Longhorn Project and works closely with the Del Valle High School FFA. “What makes this project special and incredibly rewarding are the young men and women of DVHS FFA who will not only have an enormous amount of fun, but will be learning the responsibilities and intricacies of raising Longhorns.”

Under the supervision of Kelly White, Del Valle High School Agricultural Instructor and Dr. William (Bill) Selman, veterinarian, the FFA students will be responsible for raising the Longhorns which could include assisting with births and tracking vaccinations as well as making sure the animals are fed and well cared for.

“Most FFA programs are about showing cattle at livestock shows,” said Kelly White, Del Valle High School Agriculture teacher. “Airport Fast Park is giving Austin students the opportunity to develop the working knowledge they will need to raise and breed cattle in a ranch-type setting.”

For more information, visit the company’s Web site at or call a local Airport Fast Park representative at the (512) 385-8877. Watch some of the video from the event on the Fox Channel 7 Web site.

Happy Belated Birthday! TLBAA Member Celebrates 85 th Birthday!

Happy belated Birthday to long time Longhorn breeder and TLBAA member Bill Derey, Blackstone, VA, who celebrated his 85th birthday on July 8, 2007. Since the 80s, Derey has been well known for breeding big-horned cattle. Roger Townsend and Larry Bischoff of BT Farms in Pulaski, TN, were in Blackstone, VA, to celebrate with Bill and his wife Betty. Townsend became good friends with Bill a few years ago after purchasing cattle from him. And said in an email, “Derey should be an inspiration to all breeders, after all he still runs a good sized herd and works all of his cattle himself with no help.” Let's all take our hats off to a seasoned cattleman who's still getting it done after all these years.

Betty and Bill Derey, Blackstone, VA.
Thanks to Roger Townsend for alerting the E-Trails and Trails via email!

Drought Conditions Update

Click here for information about the seasonal drought conditions and updated national drought information directly from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Here is an additional weekly drought monitor from NOAA.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Hay prices steady to firm this week under moderate demand. Trade activity and movement continues light to moderate. Most producers continue cutting and baling in favorable mild to hot weather. Supply of high quality small bales remains tight with large rounds, especially Coastal Bermuda, in abundant to large quantities. This large inventory of large rounds has been slow moving. High fuel, equipment and trucking costs continue to be major concerns plaguing the hay business. Hay needs from ranchers with good pasture conditions are very light at present and some hay producers continue to put up hay in storage and sell at a later date in hopes of higher prices. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
