Longhorns Participate in Oklahoma Centennial Cattle Drive

Texas Longhorn cattle are currently trekking across Oklahoma towards Kansas. The 2007 Chisholm Trail Cattle Drive, part of the Oklahoma Centennial, will last until October 5, 2007. Part of the cattle were supplied by TLBAA members Larry and Marlene Abel, Alex, OK, and Col. Eddie and Joyce Wood, Wynnewood, OK.

The 450-head herd is traveling about 13-14 miles per day. Making the drive is a composite of full-time cowboys and ranchers who, while on the cattle drive, are living like cowboys did in the Old West on little sleep, beans, potatoes and strip steak. Larry Abel is one of the riders and is a district foreman for the drive. More information is available on the Cattle Drive’s Web site at www.cattledrive2007.com.Find out more on the 2007 Chisholm Trail Cattle Drive’ Web site.

Drought Conditions Update

Click here for information about the seasonal drought conditions and updated national drought information directly from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Here is an additional weekly drought monitor from NOAA.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Prices remain steady. Trade is slow to moderate with demand moderate. Movement is mostly slow, with few sales being reported. Many believe that buyers are resisting higher prices now in hopes of pushing down the market later in the fall. Dairy and horse quality hay is still in short supply, although with some areas experiencing better weather conditions, there are hopes of some better crop in the near future. Some areas have dried out and hay is being made, while others are having problems getting any hay put up. Soil moisture has been rated as short to excellent, with the majority as good. Pasture and rangeland conditions are good to excellent. Corn has been reported as good, with some areas continuing or starting harvest. Some are beginning field preparation for wheat crops. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
