Red McCombs Fiesta Longhorn Sale Results

May 5, 2007
Johnson City, TX
Auctioneer: Bruce McCarty
Sale Hosts: Red and Charline McCombs

Tucked away in the rolling hills of Texas’ beautiful Hill Country was the scene of one of the most anticipated sales this year. Many Longhorn breeders came from far and wide to enjoy the hospitality of TLBAA Members Red and Charline McCombs.

On Friday night, all were treated to home cooked barbeque featuring Longhorn beef and pork. Red McCombs personally welcomed attendees and introduced his honored guests from the Navajo Nation from New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. Live Country Western Swing music was performed by Bruce Hudson and the Most Wanted Band.

Bruce Hudson and the Most Wanted Band performed for a Friday night party before the Red McCombs Fiesta Sale on Saturday May 5, 2007.

Before the sale on Saturday, May 5, 2007, the Navajo representatives were honored with a personal invitation to visit San Antonio on Thursday, May 10, 2007, from the Mayor of San Antonio, Phil Hardberger. The sale started at 1pm, after the guests enjoyed a barbeque fajita lunch, courtesy of the McCombs. A cool, and sometimes strong, south wind kept the rain from ruining a lovely day and very strong sale.

Drought Conditions Update

Click here for information about the seasonal drought conditions and updated national drought information directly from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Here is an additional weekly drought monitor from NOAA.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Prices are holding steady and supply is tight. Trade and demand moderate, with most reporting slow movement. With new crop still being two to three weeks away, this transitional stage has everyone confused and not sure which way to turn. More new crop hay bids have been made, but still not much has been traded. The Panhandle had experienced warmer temperatures earlier in the week, followed by rains. Reports have been made that growers are still a couple weeks away from first cutting, but wheat hay is still being cut and put up. Some growers in the West have completed their first cutting and baling. Areas in the West received some rain while others experienced gusty winds, which caused some soil moisture loss and some plant damage. In the North, Central and Eastern areas winter crops are still being laid down. Coastal Bermuda has not been showing much growth due to all the rains received, but it is starting to look green and lush. Some have experienced problems with extreme heavy rains, which in turn has caused some to have problems with weeds because they could not get into the fields to spray because of the wet weather. Comments have been made that hay that had been cut before the rains, will not be very high quality. The South has also received rain, so much so that some have experienced flooding conditions. Growers also expect a lower quality first crop as the hay that was laid down has gotten too much rain on it. Soil moisture has been rated as short to surplus. Wheat is poor to excellent. Rangeland and pasture conditions are mostly fair to good. Some supplemental feeding continues, more so in the South. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
