North Texas State Fair

The rain in Denton was a welcomed surprise to those showing Texas Longhorns at the North Texas State Fair on Saturday, Aug. 28. Many breeders were thankful for the rain, which cooled off a usual hot Texas summer day.

A total of 28 youngsters aspiring to win Autobahn Motorcar Scholarship money exhibited nearly 100 Texas Longhorns at the fair.

“I was really excited to see the amount of youth that were at the fair,” said staff member Stephanie “Peach” Ray. “These kids are the future of the TLBAA.”

This was the first time a show in the Autobahn Motorcar Scholarship Tour was held at the North Texas State Fair. The event was chaired by Rodney and Patti Mahaffey of Decatur and judged by Ron Gill of Dallas.

Of the 28 youngsters competing, 24 won scholarship money. A total of $6,000 was divided amongst the show’s 12 classes. In each class, first-place winners were awarded $150; second-place winners, $125; third-place winners, $100; fourth-place winners, $75; and fifth-place winners, $50.

The Grand Champion Female was Miss Chievous exhibited by Shannon Collins of Stephenville, TX. The Reserve Grand Champion Female was 3TP Cold and Bold exhibited by Tanner Sistrunk of Wills Point, TX. The Grand Champion Bull was HD Edges Rocket exhibited by Kari Dennis of Coupland, TX. The Reserve Grand Champion Bull was RHL Echo’s Arrowhead exhibited by Laura Harding of College Station, TX. The Grand Champion Steer was JTW Flaming Skunk exhibited by Allie Galloway of Boyd, TX. The Reserve Grand Champion Steer was G&L Monte Hale exhibited by Tanner Sistrunk.

Autobahn Motorcar Scholarship funds were increased this year to $110,000 total; with the top five placings in each class receiving part of the monetary prize. Students compete in 10 youth shows where more than $6,000 is distributed at each show and a National Youth Show with a value of $50,000.

The goal of the scholarship is to give young Longhorn breeders an opportunity to receive financial aid for their college education. Students do not have to own their own Longhorns, thanks to our members who are generous enough to allow their Longhorns to be shown by others.

Besides the youth show, the North Texas Sate Fair was the location for the open haltered show. The open haltered show, judged by Jim Ed Hale, received 72 entries.
